Australian Fashion Week kicked off yesterday with an explosion of colour at Romance was Born’s off-site show at the Sydney Theatre Company. Their theatrical presentations are always highly anticipated, and this year they didn’t disappoint, transforming models into super heroes and sending them out against a giant paper pop-up backdrop. No super hero tops Wonder Woman, and Romance was Born’s interpretation was the best yet. Cartoon prints, metallic foil dresses, sequin skirts, boxy jackets and embellished bustiers packed a punch while still being completely wearable. That’s what struck me most to be honest, how wearable the collection actually was. Perhaps not all at once, but one could easily pluck out a sequin skirt or cartoon bomber and fit it into their current wardrobe. After all, who doesn’t like a little super hero sass.
