In the studio with Mania Mania

For my latest Style Spy post, I caught up with Tamila Purvis, one half of the Mania Mania duo in their beautiful Sydney studio. Mystical and raw, their pieces have the perfect kind of imperfections that makes jewellery special. And Tamila is cool personified – the kind of girl you can’t help but want to be – laidback, layered in jewels, with killer style.

You can check out Mania Mania’s current collection here. My pick is the Telepathic Ear Cuff; clean and simple with plenty of edge.

Berlin Calling

Berlin is a city unlike any other; relatively new as so much of it has been rebuilt after the war, and even now it seems as if it’s constant state of construction. On first impression the streets are wide, sparse and utilitarian. But once you delve a little further, it’s like a concrete wonderland of incredible stores, super cool cafes and hidden bars.

I was in Berlin over New Years, which meant I was lucky enough to experience the extremity of German fireworks. Corner stores sell fire crackers for less than a euro, people shoot them from moving cars and the large crackers sound like a car back-firing. It was a lot of fun, and as it hit midnight, the skyline truly did come alive.

The city has attitude and a unique aesthetic; restaurants with laid-back interiors serve up great food, there are more menswear boutiques than I’ve ever seen in one place, and the style on the street is cool, grunge and vintage-focused. I really could imagine living at in Berlin at some point, here’s hoping that happens.

I met Aude in Brussels, in a super cool store by the name of Hunting and Collecting. Everything about it was right on the money; understated but cool visual merchandising, a great designer selection and a carefully curated space.

It was Aude’s amazing jacket that caught my eye. Since diving head first into a European winter, I have become obsessed with coats and jackets of any kind. And Aude’s coat by French designer Christophe Lemaire is one of the best I’ve seen around; perfectly over-sized, with subtle tweed fabric and two roomy pockets. I love her vintage sweater and Avelon leather pants too – both ultimate winter essentials when it comes to braving the cold. But it’s her beautiful red hair that makes this look; striking and super casual all at the same time.

I’ve been following the same skincare routine for the past four years, and I figured it’s high time I gave another brand a whirl. Beauty is not my forte, and I’m not exactly the best at branching out. Fortunately for me, the Cellnique moisturiser I decided on did the trick. With a name like cellular repair emulsion, you can’t go wrong really. But as I come towards the end of the baby blue tub, the search is on once again. Of course, recommendations are more than welcome.
